2014 just kicking in and you just released “Chiaroscuro”, your latest album.
Do you feel like us, that the time for I Break Horses as a support band might be ending and this might be the year were I Break Horses really consolidates its status in the alternative/indie scene?

We definitely hope so! It’s been fantastic to support wonderful acts like M83 and Sigur Rós too but yes, we’re looking forward to play headline shows to be able to show a larger spectrum of what IBH is about. I think what we long for the most now is to be able to fine tune our live shows both sound wise and visually, we’ve never had the money to do that really so there has been a lot of compromising so far. There are so many things we’d like to incorporate into our shows and hopefully we’ll get there sooner or later!

We´ve read in other interviews that “Hearts” took you like 3 years to record it and then “Chiaroscuro’s” record process began early 2013 and took only round 6 months. What has changed since “Hearts”, music wise, in I Break Horses?

To be honest the first album was a real catharsis for me in so many different ways so I was mainly relieved when it was over and out there. It was almost as I couldn´t start enjoying life until the recording and production of the debut album had come to an end. So quite soon after that I felt the urge to start playing around with some ideas that just came dancing to me in a rather playful and relaxed manner, even if the sound of the songs resulted in a rather dark overall feel. Music wise though, I don’t think much has happened really, it’s very important to me to try out different moods/soundscapes from album to album cause that’s what inspires me as a songwriter. For “Chiaroscuro” I wanted to explore something icier and darker and more electronic sounding. The next album will most likely be different.

We can also see a difference between both LP´s. “Hearts” seems more bright, also there´re some guitars. “Chiaroscuro” is more electronic, more reflexive, introspective…
Is going to be “Chiaroscuro” the first step of what I Break Horses will be doing
in the feature or is just that this album it’s being born like this and in the future you will experiment and try different sounds etc?

Exactly, “Chiaroscuro” is an album that was born like this and I just had to get it out of my chest. I will definitely experiment with other sounds and moods for future releases, that’s really what keeps me going and what makes the creativity process fun and exciting to me.

You guys have played with M83, Sigur Ros… It can be said that, since each band has its own music style, a common pattern can be seen between those bands and I Break Horses. Is there a band in particular that you would like to play with?

There are so many great bands out there so it’s difficult to chose one! I’d love to collaborate with the composer William Basinski at some point if that would ever be possible.

You´ve been performing from big festivals as Primavera Sound, big stages as Wembley Arena or little venues as the Village Underground. Where does I Break Horses feel more confortable playing?

We will never forget Primavera Sound, it was just amazing in every possible way! Even if we were all down with a really bad flu that specific show, there was so much love, a fantastic atmosphere that made us forget all about the illness. The stages doesn’t really matter as long as there is magic and an audience you feel connected to.
